My Checklist Before I Buy Any "Sustainable" Brand at Full Price

I've made peace with the fact that I can't research every sustainable brand thoroughly before buying from them. I don't have the time, and honestly most people don't either. What I've developed instead is a shortcut — a five-question checklist that takes less than five minutes to work through and that filters out enough of the obvious problems that I feel okay paying full price.

This isn't meant to be a definitive sustainability audit. It's a practical reality check. It catches the brands that are mostly marketing, and it lets the ones that seem to have genuinely done some work move forward for a full-depth research if I'm still interested.

Here's what I actually use.

The Five Questions

1. Can I find a specific answer to "where are your clothes made?"

Not "ethically sourced" or "responsibly produced." Specific. Factory names, locations, or at minimum a country and some indication of what transparency exists.

If a brand's website says "made in Portugal" or "our facilities in Vietnam" or lists specific factory names, that's a signal they've done at least some work on traceability. If the page just says "made with care" or "manufactured responsibly" with no geographic detail, that's a signal to be skeptical.

The reason this matters: it's almost impossible for a brand to commit to transparency if transparency would expose problems. A brand that's willing to name where things are made is usually willing to be held accountable. A brand that keeps it vague usually has reasons.

2. Do they publish any wage or labor practice information?

This is the one most brands completely dodge. Even sustainable brands. Most will talk about "fair wages" or "safe working conditions" as an abstract value, but very few will publish actual wage data or third-party audits of labor practices.

If a brand publishes their lowest wage paid across their supply chain (like Nisolo does), that's significant. If they publish third-party audit results, that's significant. If they describe their labor practices in vague aspirational language and nothing else, they're probably not doing the deeper work.

The specificity here is what you're looking for. General claims are easy. Specific claims about wages or working conditions are harder to make without backing them up.

3. Are the materials and certifications actually aligned, or is there a mismatch?

This is where I catch a lot of greenwashing. A brand will tout that they use "sustainable materials" and list a certification, but when you look at what the certification actually covers, it doesn't match the claims.

For example: a brand might say they use "organic cotton certified by GOTS" — that's a real certification with real standards. But another brand might say they use "eco-friendly fabrics" with no specific certification named, which tells you almost nothing. A third might be B Corp certified and claim that makes them sustainable — but B Corp covers company practices, not product-level sustainability.

The test is: can you cross-check the material claim against the certification? If the certification actually covers what they're claiming, that's good. If there's a mismatch or the certification is vague, you've spotted a problem.

4. Is there a price-to-transparency ratio that makes sense?

Some sustainable brands are expensive because the materials are genuinely expensive and the production is genuinely different. Some sustainable brands are expensive because they're marketing a sustainable story to a premium-paying audience.

A rough heuristic: if a brand is charging a significant premium for sustainability, they should be willing to explain in detail why. A $120 sweater with extensive transparency about materials, production, and labor makes sense for a premium price. A $120 sweater with vague claims about "consciousness" or "responsibility" is probably mostly paying for the brand story.

This is where going back to questions 1-3 really matters. If a brand has good answers to the first three questions, a higher price is more justified. If they don't, the premium is probably just branding.

5. Are they claiming to be sustainable in a category where that's actually difficult, or in a category where it's easy?

This is a sophistication check. Sustainable footwear is genuinely hard. Sustainable denim is hard. Sustainable outerwear is hard. These are categories where production is complex, materials are material-intensive, and hitting sustainability targets requires real innovation and cost.

Sustainable basics — a simple tee, a plain sweater — are easier. Not easy, but easier. A brand claiming to be sustainable in a genuinely complex category is probably doing harder work than a brand claiming sustainability in a simpler category, all else equal.

This isn't a dealbreaker for simple pieces. But it does suggest that if a brand is targeting a genuinely difficult category, they probably know what they're doing, whereas a brand making only basics should be held to a higher standard for transparency.

How I Actually Use This

When I'm considering a full-price purchase from a brand I don't know well, I open their website and spend five minutes on it. I ask myself these five questions. If I get clear, specific answers to at least three of them, I'm comfortable buying. If I get vague answers to most of them, I wait or I pass.

This isn't perfect. A brand could have good answers to these questions and still have problems I'm not catching. But what this checklist does is eliminate the brands that are purely marketing-driven, and those are the ones most worth avoiding.

The brands I actually end up buying from repeatedly — Nisolo, Veja, Quince, Patagonia — all pass this checklist easily. They have specific factory information. They publish labor data or commit to transparency. Their material claims align with real certifications. Their pricing reflects the actual work they've done. And they're working on genuinely difficult problems (footwear, supply chain transparency, specific sustainability standards).

The brands I see everywhere on Instagram with sustainability language and minimal specificity? They rarely pass this checklist.

What This Isn't

This checklist is not: a definitive measure of sustainability. A brand that passes all five questions could still have problems I don't know about. What it is: a practical filter that takes five minutes and eliminates obvious problems.

I combine this with other sources — reading longer sustainability reports, checking third-party reviews on Remake or The Good On You, looking at Reddit discussions — but those are more thorough dives I do if I'm considering a significant purchase. This checklist is the first-pass reality check.

The reason I share it is that I think most people, if given a simple framework, would ask harder questions before buying "sustainable" products at premium prices. The framework doesn't require expertise. It just requires specificity. And specificity is genuinely hard to fake.

If a brand can't answer these five questions clearly, they probably haven't done the work. And if they haven't done the work, they don't deserve the premium.
